“An idol is anything put over God.”
For this devotional I wanted to write about how we tend to put things over God. We turn those things into idols/gods. When we put these things over God we are worshipping them when we should be worshipping Christ. These things do not have to be people, it could be anything. Christians what you look up to could become idols/gods. If you are not careful.
Since the beginning of time people have struggled with worshiping false gods the difference is our false gods have changed. But, if you really think about it our gods aren’t changing much. They used to worship golden and silver man-made gods, now we worship our phones. We are not bowing down to our phones, instead we are constantly putting them first in our lives. People would also worshipped kings and other high people. Now we worship those in movies and people who have their music in the top 50s. Money is a false god. Money is probably always going to be a false god. We are always so worried about having a ton of money so we can have what others have.
“You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3 This is one of the ten commandments. Its says you should have no gods before God, that is pretty self-explanatory. Do not put other things before God. He should always be number one in your life. Not your role model, your favorite tv show, or even a friend. God should be above all those. I know how hard it may seem to put God over those but, He wants us to put Him first so we can see His way for our life.
“Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing.” – Isaiah 44:10
When you have a god over God you gain nothing. Those things you put over Him and idolize will not always be there for you. These idols and gods we put over God take us from God.
“Dear children, keep yourself from idols.” – 1 John 5:21 This verse is not only for children but, for anyone who believes in Christ and has Him in their heart. Get rid of anything that could take Gods place in your heart. Even if that happens to be a relationship then that relationship is not one God intended. Just because you both believe does not mean you will not take each other from Christ.
We are to worship our creator not man-made things or other people. Our creator loves us more than any idol/god ever could. A lot of times in the Old Testament people are making their own idols and sculpt them into animals and people. These man-made things cannot be there for you. “Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” – Colossians 3:2
Set your heart to love the Lord more than earthly things.
In Exodus 32 The people were worshiping a golden calf. They made the gold calf out of their jewelry. Making that gold calf made the Lord angry. These people knew who God was. Yet they still felt the need to worship man-made gods. The golden calf was destroyed. To me that is proof that your man-made gods will not last. If you worship your electronics they will break eventually. If you worship other people they die eventrually and they fail you at times. Even if they do not mean to fail you.
One of the biggest false gods ever is yourself. We are constantly wanting to be perfect and better than everybody else. Adam and Eve even wanted to be gods. (see Genesis 3:5) Today people are so selfish. We only care about ourselves and our needs and wants. When you worship yourself you will never feel completed. You will constantly be trying to better your imperfections to only find more. You will want the world to see you as someone great.
In Daniel 3 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did not bow down to a false god unlike everyone else. They would not bow down because they believed in a higher God, which is our savour. Due to the fact they would not bow down, they were thrown in the fiery furnace. God was there with them. God protected them while in the furnace.
Have me to desire you over everything. I want you to be number one in my life. Keep me from false gods and idols of the world. Protect my heart. Remind me and warn me of false idols and gods daily. Thank you Lord.
